Mentorship plays a vital role in the success of start-up founders, offering both practical knowledge and emotional support and having access to experienced mentors helps entrepreneurs understand business strategies, navigate challenges, and make informed decisions.

This guidance accelerates learning and reduces costly mistakes, ultimately increasing a founder's chances of success in a competitive business environment. Mentors also provide emotional encouragement, helping founders stay resilient and manage the stress of building a business. The findings from the 2024 UK Startup Awards highlight the significant impact mentorship has on entrepreneurs and the existing gaps in access to mentorship resources.

Research shows that half of start-up founders currently have a mentor with 27% having a male mentor and 23% having a female mentor. However, the absence of mentorship for 50% of entrepreneurs underscores a gap that could be addressed through structured mentorship programmes, which have been shown to significantly enhance business outcomes. Entrepreneurs with mentors are more likely to overcome challenges, make informed decisions, and access critical networks. Mentors also provide guidance, accountability, and strategic advice, particularly for first-time entrepreneurs who may lack experience in navigating complex business landscapes.

The data reveals notable differences in mentorship access across various demographics. Among female entrepreneurs, 19% have a female mentor compared to only 7% of male entrepreneurs. Additionally, males are more likely to have both male and female mentors, with 18% reporting this compared to 9% of females. This suggests that female entrepreneurs are more likely to seek out or receive mentorship from other women, while male entrepreneurs tend to engage with a more diverse range of mentors.

Age also influences mentorship access with 47% of younger entrepreneurs (16-34) and 41% of older entrepreneurs (35+) currently have a mentor. Younger entrepreneurs are slightly more likely to have both male and female mentors, indicating that they may be engaging with more diverse mentorship models  highlighting the growing recognition of mentorship's value among the younger generation of entrepreneurs.

Sectoral differences also emerge in mentorship trends and 65% of non-tech entrepreneurs and 44% of tech entrepreneurs currently do not have a mentor. However, tech entrepreneurs are far more likely to have both male and female mentors, with 23% reporting this compared to only 8% of non-tech entrepreneurs. This indicates that tech entrepreneurs benefit from more structured mentorship programmes, often provided by incubators and accelerators, which offer access to a broad pool of mentors. In contrast, non-tech entrepreneurs may face fewer formalised mentorship opportunities.

Regional disparities in mentorship access are also evident with 49% of entrepreneurs in the most prosperous part of the UK more likely to report that they have a mentor compared to those in the rest of the UK (38%). Entrepreneurs in affluent areas are also more likely to report having both male and female mentors (19%) compared to only 9% in the rest of the UK. This suggests that entrepreneurs in prosperous regions benefit from better access to mentorship networks, likely due to the concentration of entrepreneurial ecosystems, funding opportunities, and professional networks.

Therefore, the findings from the 2024 UK Startup Awards underscore the critical role mentorship plays in fostering entrepreneurial success. Encouraging a culture of mentorship and connecting founders with experienced professionals can ultimately contribute to a more resilient and dynamic start-up ecosystem. But despite its proven benefits, a significant number of non-tech founders, those in less prosperous regions, and female entrepreneurs lack access to mentorship opportunities. By expanding mentorship initiatives and providing targeted support to underrepresented groups, this gap could be closed and more entrepreneurs could get the guidance, networks, and resources they need to succeed.
